Professor Rob McSherry

Professor Nursing and Practice Development, School of Health and Social Care, University of Teesside, UK

Rob is currently seconded part-time to the North East Strategic Health Authority as a Senior Nurse Adviser. In January 2007 Rob was conferred Professor Nursing and Practice Development for his outstanding contributions to nursing and practice development having undertaken the role of Principal Lecturer in Practice Development School of Health and Social Care, University of Teesside for the past eight years.

Rob holds an honorary contract for the post of Practice Development Advisor within the Division of Medicine, James Cook, University Hospital, Middlesbrough. Following nurse registration in 1988 Rob pursued a career in Care of the Older Person and Acute Medical Nursing until in 1994 when he became a Practice Development Advisor/Lecturer in Medical Specialties for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Sheffield.

Rob joined the University of Teesside in 1999 as a Senior Lecturer in practice development which has remained is focus of expertise since. Rob was the founder member of the North East and Yorkshire Developing Practice Network and in June 2005 was elected as the Chair of the Developing Practice Network (DPN) United Kingdom supporting its integration into the Foundation of Nursing Studies.  In March 2007 Rob was appointed Clinical Associate Professor with the Australian Catholic University, Brisbane, Australia.

Robs academic and practice role and responsibilities have resulted with some excellent innovations and changes in health and social care practice. For example, the establishment of a Professional Doctorate in Advancing Practice and the Excellence in Practice Accreditation Scheme (EPAS). Robs main interest is seeing research being utilized at a clinical level where nurses, midwives, nurse specialists and other Allied Health Professionals are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to aid this process. Rob has shared and disseminated his work on practice development around three key areas; practice and professional development, healthcare governance and evidence-informed practice internationally and nationally through publications, conferences, consultancy and workshops.
